The Vegetarian Cat - Proof of Creation?

28 April 2009

Review by Greg Neyman

In the daily feature from Creation Ministries International for 28 April 2009, Carl Wieland used the example of a cat that refuses to eat meat, to argue that the animals prior to the Fall of man were vegetarian.1   This article only shows how desperate young earth creationists are to find any shred of evidence that can be used to support their position.

Wieland relates how the cat, named Dante, who is now two years old, refuses to eat any kind of meat, including milk products.   While it is not uncommon for cats to eat vegetables, this cat appears to be a very unique feline, turning its nose up at common foods that cats love, such as fish and chicken.

Wieland states that veterinary experts advise against a vegetarian diet for cats, since cats need arachidonic acid and taurine.  Wieland explains these away, claiming instead that Dante is perfectly healthy.  However, these are only two examples.  A website devoted to vegetarian people lists seven essential nutrients that cats on a vegan diet would miss.2

It is important to note that Dante is only two years old.  Health problems from lack of certain vitamins and other nutrients may not manifest themselves so quickly.  Only time will tell whether or not Dante suffers any ill health from this diet.

When it comes to scientific evidences for God's creation, we should not rely upon the diet of cats to prove our point.  If asked to provide evidence that the earth is young, a young earth creationist saying, "It is young because this cat is vegetarian" does not carry much scientific weight.  Sometimes the depth that young earth creationists sink to in order to support their point is astounding.  They must make silly claims such as this, because real science does not support their claims.  Unfortunately, they are all too happy to use such nonsense.  The article in question references three other examples of vegetarian animals.
