What Part Does the Flood of Noah's Day Play in Creation Thinking?

This question was published in Dr. John's Q&A by John Morris in April 1998.  If you are a young earth creationist, the Flood plays a huge part in your thinking about the earth.  Morris gives a brief introduction about his father's book, The Genesis Flood, which many say started the modern young earth movement.  He says that prior to this, most scientists held to a form of theistic evolution.

He claims that when a young earth creationist is looking for evidence, he looks to the Flood.  I agree, this is what most young earth creationists do.  However, this is false hope, since there is no geologic evidence for a global flood.

Morris goes on with some general comments about floods, and then he makes the astonishing claim, "even evolutionary geologists have grudgingly acknowledged the catastrophic nature of nearly all rock units."  Nothing could be further from the truth!  As a person with a B.S. in Geology, and having kept up with geology trends over the years, I have seen no evidence to support his claim.  What he may be referring to is that some features within rock units have been identified as catastrophic in origin, but the unit as a whole is not...only these small, isolated features are.

Next, Morris says that they also recognize that marine shellfish are virtually unchanged from the way they were millions of years ago.  However, this is evidence of stasis, and not evidence against evolution.  Evolution does not state that organisms must evolve, only that they can evolve.

Contrary to what Morris claims, the global Flood makes no sense of the geologic record.

If you are not a Christian, and you have been holding out on making a decision for Christ because the Church always preached a message that was contrary to what you saw in the scientific world, then rest assured that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God, and you can believe in Christ and receive salvation, while still believing in an old earth.  Click here for more.
