This article by Dr. Carl Wieland discussed Cro-Magnon man, and his implication for human ancestry and the Biblical timeline.1

Wieland notes up front the fact that Cro-Magnon is considered anatomically to be a modern human, and he gives some general background information which is accurate.

He goes on to state the nervousness of evolutionists, when they find fossil hominids with other extinct creatures such as the mammoth.  He goes on to state that

If the creationists of that day had really taken the whole account of Creation and the Flood seriously and at face value, they would have realized that Man lived contemporaneously with all created living things, including many that are now extinct.

Taking Wieland at his word, one would expect to find dinosaurs and human fossils in the same rock layers, but that is not the case, nor is that true for 99 percent of the species that have lived in the past and are now extinct.  He goes on to paint a picture of how the public was duped into believing Cro-Magnon (and Neanderthal) were pre-Biblical, but this comes across as sounding like the bitterness of one person, and is not based in fact, nor upon some evolutionists grand plan to convert the public.

He goes on to claim that the image of a club-bearing caveman is wrong, and every evidence points to man rapidly appearing and advancing.  So much for scientific truth.  In fact, the fossil record on man's evolution (if you choose to believe in evolution) is quite good.  To check it out further, see Fossil Hominids.

Wieland claims it is a surprise for the evolutionist to find "very early" specimens of modern man with a high level of technology and culture (living in huts, making stone floors, baking pottery, making musical instruments, and of course, their artwork.  However, I see no surprise nor problems for the evolutionist.  Despite Wieland's claims that this is contrary to what the evolutionist expects, evolutionists don't appear to be surprised, nor alarmed.

Within the old earth creationist framework, there are two possibilities.  First, Cro-Magnon are seen as prior to Adam, and thus are soul-less hominids.  They were capable of making tools, doing artwork, and other tasks, but these tasks in no way testifies to their being nothing more than animal-like and soul-less (intelligence is no indication of an eternal soul).

Second, many view Adam and Eve, and the appearance of Cro-Magnon about 40,000 years ago, as synonymous.  The time frame is within the possibilities of the genealogies of Genesis, and even more convincing, mitochondrial DNA evidence shows that we all shared a common ancestor, which dates to about 40,000 years ago (Wieland did not have this DNA evidence available in 1978).  Naturally, young earth creationists are unwilling to accept Adam existing that long ago, but for old earth creationism, there are no problems.  This interpretation has no conflicts from a scriptural perspective.
