Problems in Interpreting Genesis, Part 2

Ex Nihilo, Volume 2, Issue 4, October 1979

Review by Greg Neyman

This article by Dr. Noel Weeks is a continuation from the previous issue of Ex Nihilo.  He starts by saying

'One of the fundamental beliefs of evangelical Christianity is that "the Bible is its own interpreter". This belief comes under attack when Christians try to interpret Genesis 1-11 so as to fit into evolutionary biology and uniformitarian geology.

When a person inserts evolution, or uniformitarian geology, he is not adding anything to the Bible.  The Bible itself does not tell us how long creation took, nor how.  We are free to determine this from general revelation.  Thus, the first sentence can also be agreed to by the old earth creationist.

In the first major section, he argues for a literal interpretation of Genesis.  As an old earth creationist, I agree.  This is only an issue for the more liberal people within old earth creationism.

In his remaining discussion, he brings up standard arguments.  He mentions Exodus 20:8-11, and Psalm 104, for which Answers in Creation has articles.

If you are not a Christian, and you have been holding out on making a decision for Christ because the Church always preached a message that was contrary to what you saw in the scientific world, then rest assured that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God, and you can believe in Christ and receive salvation, while still believing in an old earth.  Click here for more.
