N434:  High mountains were raised during the Flood

Argument: 

Prior to the flood, the earth was relatively flat.  The flood caused high mountains to be raised.  This explanation makes it possible for existing waters to flood and entirely cover the earth

Response: 

  1. The catastrophic forming of mountains would have released tremendous amounts of heat and mechanical energy, enough to boil the oceans and metamorphose the minerals in the mountains.  There is no trace of such an event

  2. If all mountain ranges formed from the flood, then why do we have mountain ranges with different ages?  The Appalachian mountains are vastly older than the Rockies.  This model cannot account for this problem

  3. The original claim originated prior to the theory of plate tectonics.  The mountain-building forces of tectonics have been studied in detail, including their histories for many millions of years in the past.  They provide an excellent explanation of how mountains are formed

  4. Old earth creationism accepts plate tectonics, and does not have to resort to poor scientific explanations for the formation of mountains
