Did God Create with Appearance of Age?

Review by Greg Neyman

This question was published in Dr. John's Q&A by John Morris in March 1997.  This question is a divided issue when it comes to old earth creationists.  Progressive creationists will agree, in part, with Morris, and theistic evolutionists will disagree completely with Morris.

Morris starts out claiming that when Adam was created, he "no doubt looked like a mature adult."  As a progressive creationist, I would agree, however, the text is not clear on this issue.  It merely says God created man, and placed him in the Garden...it makes no references to age.  Next, Morris says that "When God created fruit trees, they were already bearing fruit."  That's a nice picture, but again the text does not support this viewpoint.  It merely says that God created them.  If you want to believe this, you are more than welcome to do so, but we cannot be dogmatic about it.

He then says a time traveler, who goes back to Day 7, would see Adam as a man.  I agree, however, Day 7 is still ongoing...he would see me also!  Morris is referring to the moment the creative acts ended, or the end of Day 6.  I still agree that Adam would appear to be a man.  We don't know how many years Adam had within the confines of what we know as Day 6, but it is reasonable to assume that he had many years, for he grew up, and named the animals, and found out that he had no suitable helper.

Morris claims that the present laws of physics were not in place during the creation period.  However, there is no indication from the fields of astronomy and geology, which study the past, that this is true.  Science gives every indication that these physical laws have been operating for billions of years.

Morris mentions Romans 1:20, which old earth creationists often refer to as proving an old earth.   Scientists studying the world come to the right conclusion about its age, because creation testifies to God.  He claims that this ignores the teachings of creation, the Fall, and the Flood.  However, as an old earth Christian, I fully accept the creation, the Fall, and the Flood.  I just accept a different interpretation of these events.

Morris fails to present any real evidence for his young earth viewpoint.  When it comes to this topic, the problem I always like to highlight is that of supernovas.  These events, which can be observed by astronomers, may have taken place millions of years ago, and the light takes that long to reach us.  Morris says the light from distant stars had to be visible on earth right from the start.  In other words, it was created in transit.  If this is so, then God created the illusion of many stars exploding, even though these explosions never took place.  Such deception cannot be explained when you consider that God is truth.

If you are not a Christian, and you have been holding out on making a decision for Christ because the Church always preached a message that was contrary to what you saw in the scientific world, then rest assured that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God, and you can believe in Christ and receive salvation, while still believing in an old earth.  Click here for more.
