Is Creationism A Missionary Effort?

Review by Greg Neyman

This question was published in Dr. John's Q&A by John Morris in January 1991.  In answering this question, Morris relates how many opportunities exist for the spreading of the Gospel through the young earth message.  He relates a story of giving lectures in Moscow, and the response to those messages.   Yes, young earth creation science can be effective.  But it is not the best option in every situation.

Morris says that missionaries and Christian leaders claim that evolution is the biggest obstacle to belief in the gospel.  I cannot confirm this, but I have a different story to tell.  I have been contacted by several missionaries, who shared with me their problems related to young earth creation science, which is dogmatically taught as the truth.  In their case, young earth creationism is a hindrance to the Gospel, and not an aid.

On the statement about evolution being an obstacle, Morris relates how many cultures are based on animism, polytheism, and pantheism.    Apparently, these peoples have recognized that the earth is old, and therefore when confronted by missionaries who proclaim bad science, claiming that the earth is young, it is only natural for them to reject such nonsense.  However, if a missionary goes to them, and the missionary believes the earth is old, then this roadblock does not exist, and the missionary may see more fruits from his witness among these people.

It is clear from Scriptures that God does not care what you believe about creation, and you can accept billions of years and be a Christian.   Therefore the words of the Apostle Paul should be applied here.  He said, "To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some" (1 Corinthians 9:22).  By becoming advocates of old ages, we can reach the world.  Reaching out to these people with theistic evolution, or with progressive creationism, is a much better choice than young earth creationism.  If they believe in evolution, they are ripe for the message of theistic evolution.  If they believe in long ages, they are ready for the message of progressive creationism.  Therefore, when it comes to missionary work, old earth belief would appear to be a more effective tool than young earth creationism.

If you are not a Christian, and you have been holding out on making a decision for Christ because the Church always preached a message that was contrary to what you saw in the scientific world, then rest assured that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God, and you can believe in Christ and receive salvation, while still believing in an old earth.  Click here for more.
