Where do the Anti-Creationists Come From?

This question was published in Dr. John's Q&A by John Morris in April 1989.  I love the answer that Morris gives to this question, for it confirms what I have been saying for years.  First, here is my answer.  Where do anti-creationists come from?  Many are the direct result of young earth creation science teaching.

Morris tells about an atheist that he debated once.  The atheist told Morris that he grew up in a very religious Christian home and church, and as a teen he fully accepted the Bible, and planned on being a minister.  All it took was one course in evolution in college for him to abandon Christianity.  Morris says his testimony is far from unique.  "A surprising number of this country's leading atheists, humanists, and evolutionists are from evangelical Christian homes."  Morris claims they were never taught how to defend their faith.

On the contrary, I believe they knew their faith (the one he talks about was going to be a minister).  Within churches which preach a young earth, people are told that either they believe in evolution, or they believe in a young earth and the Bible, but not both.  When they learn that evolution may be true, and when they learn that a billions of years old earth is 100 percent certain, they have a choice.  Based on their learning as a youth, they must either accept a young earth and the Bible, or accept an old earth and forget the Bible.  They choose to believe in the cold hard facts of science.

However, millions of Christians believe in an old earth.  Millions of Christians believe in evolution.  If our youth are taught that they can accept long ages, or evolution, and the Bible, we would lose less to the world.  You can believe in an inerrant, literal Bible, and believe in billions of years.  Need some examples?  See Notable Christians open to an Old Earth Interpretation.

Therefore, because of the influence of young earth ministries, young people abandon the church, and become some of its staunchest opponents.  They learned from the church how to be dogmatic about a belief (in a young earth), and they turn around and use this same dogmatic attitude against the church.  Therefore, young earth creationists are responsible for breeding their own worst enemies.

In the end, Morris says that "Our only hope is to return, in our own churches, schools, seminaries, and hearts, to the infallible Word of God, especially its foundational principles in the early chapters of Genesis."  (To Morris, this means a young earth viewpoint.)  Since Morris does not mention the age of the earth, I agree with his statement.  You can fulfill his statement while believing in an old earth.

However, it is important to realize that one of the main reasons we are discussing this is because of the problem created by the teaching of young earth creationism.  The dogmatic teaching of young earth creationism has led to  some of its worst enemies, and these enemies  came from within.

If you are not a Christian, and you have been holding out on making a decision for Christ because the Church always preached a message that was contrary to what you saw in the scientific world, then rest assured that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God, and you can believe in Christ and receive salvation, while still believing in an old earth.  Click here for more.
