Can Science Go "Back to Genesis"?

This question was published in Dr. John's Q&A by John Morris in March 1993.  The question is better understood if it is rephrased, which Morris does in the second paragraph.  It should read, "Can we do better science and understand the past better by going "back to Genesis"?"

Science would probably be hundreds of years in the past if they interpreted items based on young earth creation science.  I would probably not be typing this on my computer if that were the case.

Morris says "But if one holds that the supernatural events given in Scripture really occurred, then the present data will be interpreted within that model."  However, old earth creationists accept the supernatural, and interpret scientific data within an old earth framework, and this works perfectly...much better than the young earth interpretation.

Morris frequently refers to "creationists", meaning young earth, when in fact old earth believers are creationists also, and even more so, since we don't have to twist science to fit the Bible.

Morris says that if Noah's flood happened, it would deposit many layers of sedimentary rocks filled with fossils.  He says that is what we see.  Yes, but this is an oversimplification of sedimentary geology.  He claims that the majority of rocks were deposited rapidly.  This is false, and Morris knows it.  Most rock layers, especially carbonates, are slow deposition.  How does he get away with such a false claim?

Here is one example of how this is possible.  Within a sedimentary rock layer, there are usually evidences of transgression/regression of the shoreline.  There are also fossils, which must be buried rapidly to be preserved.  An example of this may be a 500 foot thick limestone, which was deposited over millions of years.  Within this limestone, there are these transgressions, represented by several feet of sandstone.  Although this entire formation formed over millions of years, these intrusions of sandstone with fossils may have only formed in a year or so.  However, when referring to this layer, Morris can claim that the formation shows evidence of rapid formation.

Yes, you can form certain features within rock layers quickly, but the rock layer as a whole was deposited over millions of years.  Nice trick Morris, but it won't work!

Morris claims that "almost all geologists have adopted a much more catastrophic stance in recent years."  Yes, geologists have been slow to recognize catastrophic features, but this does not mean that they are all jumping on the young earth bandwagon...they all still realize that although the rock record contains catastrophic events, as a whole it still took many millions of years to form.

Near the end, Morris makes the claim "The evidence is compatible with biblical history."  This is only true if you accept long ages for creation.  Given the bad science of the young earth global flood, the young earth model is still the laughingstock of the scientific community...just ask any true scientist.  The only way to reconcile the geologic record with the Bible is with the old earth, local flood scenario.

If you are not a Christian, and you have been holding out on making a decision for Christ because the Church always preached a message that was contrary to what you saw in the scientific world, then rest assured that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God, and you can believe in Christ and receive salvation, while still believing in an old earth.  Click here for more.
