In an article in Creation Magazine in December 1991, Answers in Genesis presented evidence of a young earth in the form of a picture of a rock-encrusted pair of pliers.1
The young earth creation science author explains where the pliers were found, in a pool of water on the beach on Queensland's Sunshine Coast in Australia. The pliers are described as having a rock-hard concretion of sand and pebbles of various sizes.
The conclusion in the last sentence says "This shows that rock need not take a long time to form, as most people wrongly believe." Contrary to young earth creation science belief, old earth geologists do accept the idea that rocks can form quickly. However, although a few samples such as this prove this point, it does not mean that ALL rocks form quickly, which is what the young earth creationist needs to prove, after the Flood of Noah. The evidence for the rock record still points to an earth that is millions of years old. It doesn't matter that you can make a rock around pliers in a few years. Can you make a whole 18,000 feet geologic column (in Texas, for example) in a one year period? I'm afraid not.
This is a perfect example of "grasping at straws." The young earth creationist looks at a handful of evidences (a handful of straw), but he ignores the 50-foot tall haystack in front of him which clearly proclaims old age.
