TTMCLS - Things That Make Christians Look Stupid: The Grand Canyon

Review by Greg Neyman

One of the series of articles on Creation Science Evangelism website (the “Hovind” site) is creatively titled “Things that make evolutionists look stupid” (TTMELS for short).  The article in question for this review is about “The Grand Canyon.” 1

The Grand Canyon

He opens by saying “Standing at the bottom of the Grand Canyon and concluding that the multiple bands that line the canyon walls are products of millions of years of sedimentation is just plain stupid.”  The author of this series of articles, John Hinton, does not mince words in his discussions.  Without doubt, his emotional words will yield an emotional response in his readers.

However, his lack of scientific evidence, and his utter reliance upon emotion, makes the author the one who looks stupid.

The author apparently has no scientific training.  He shows no understanding of any geologic principles which could carve out the canyon over millions of years.  He doesn’t even try to explain why the standard geologic answer does not work.  His ignorance of scientific terms, by substituting terms such as “light pink debris, dark pink debris,” keeps the reader from confronting the evidence.  The article reads more like the work of a seventh grader than the work of a grown man.

The biggest flaw of all is in the title.  The layers of rock in the Grand Canyon are explained by geology…they have nothing to do with evolution.  Evolution is biological.  Yes, evolution can be explained by the fossils within the rock record, but the laying down of the sediments in the canyon is another science altogether.  Hinton doesn't even know the difference between biology and geology, yet he is teaching people about it through Hovind's website!

How does Hinton characterize evolutionists in this article?  Here are a few quotes:

  • Standing at the bottom of the Grand Canyon and concluding that the multiple bands that line the canyon walls are products of millions of years of sedimentation is just plain stupid.

  • I was puzzled at the time as to why they so many scientists were so gullible, but I just figured that they were morons and left it at that.

Calling evolutionists stupid, and morons, will certainly drive them further away from the Gospel.

Conclusion

If we are to love the unsaved, and win them for Christ, calling them “stupid” is not the proper way to do it.  This will turn more away from the Gospel, and harden their hearts.  Driving them away from the Gospel is working against Christ.  Hovind and Hinton, which side are you on?

If you are not a Christian, and you have been holding out on making a decision for Christ because the Church always preached a message that was contrary to what you saw in the scientific world, then rest assured that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God, and you can believe in Christ and receive salvation, while still believing in an old earth.  Click here for more.
